Federal Cuts to Libraries and Museums Threaten PA Communities: PA Humanities Statement on IMLS Elimination

March 20, 2025

On March 14, 2025, an executive order was issued calling to effectively eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal agency that provides funding to museums, libraries, and other cultural organizations nationwide. This unprecedented action threatens to cut off necessary support that these institutions rely on to serve their communities. The recent appointment of a new acting director amid efforts to dismantle the agency has intensified national concern.

At this critical moment, PA Humanities stands firmly against this proposal and is committed to advocating for continued investment in Pennsylvania’s libraries and museums.

This executive order threatens to disrupt local services, limit educational opportunities, and significantly undermine the work of cultural institutions across Pennsylvania. Museums and libraries serve as cornerstones of our communities and removing this lifeline would damage the social and economic fabric of our state, while jeopardizing the jobs of thousands of hardworking Pennsylvanians.

As a longstanding partner of the museum and library community, we have witnessed firsthand the profound and lasting impact of IMLS’s support. Trusted institutions like the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and museums in cities and towns across the state rely on this funding to sustain their operations. The IMLS has also been integral to the success of PA Humanities’ Teen Reading Lounge and Youth-Led Humanities initiatives, whose funding is now at risk as a result of this executive order.

PA Humanities urges your immediate action to protect federal funding for the IMLS and our communities:

  • Contact Congress: Reach out directly to your congressional representatives and strongly urge them to protect funding for libraries and museums.
  • Be an Advocate: Visit these American Alliance of Museums and the American Library Association pages for important advocacy resources, including templates and scripts.
  • Spread the Word: Post your support of the IMLS on social media to build awareness and inspire collective action. Include your own personal story about the role that libraries and museums play in your life, and why funding and support for these institutions is important.

We also encourage museums and libraries to complete our federal funding impact survey, conducted in partnership with Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. Contributing your voice will provide crucial data to strengthen our collective advocacy.

Now is the time to unite and protect the IMLS, ensuring that our state’s libraries and museums continue to educate, inspire, and sustain our communities. PA Humanities stands committed to be at the forefront of this advocacy work, putting the people of Pennsylvania first.
