About Us:Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

Executive Director Joseph J. Kelly, Ph.D.

2010 begins with renewed hope for the public humanities—and an invitation to share your knowledge with others. Our work is urgent, in a time of war and recession, when minds and hearts tend to contract rather than expand. PHC is about increasing understanding, and expanding our vision of human life, community and possibility.

Through a new catalog for the Commonwealth Speakers program, 80 experts are now sharing their passion for learning with thousands of individuals. We're connecting them with hundreds of nonprofits, meeting local needs for free, quality programs and responsive institutions. Our new television project, Humanities on the Road, will radically extend our reach via PCN, featuring Speakers matched to sites that showcase cultural treasures. Twelve live events this spring, to be broadcast in the fall, will engage sites across the entire state. Programs will highlight the richness of Pennsylvania history and culture, particularly the diverse people who make up our Commonwealth.

To keep us innovative, responsive and agile, we are asking for your financial support. PHC is an independent, private, 501(c) (3) organization. We are down 75% in state grants this year. So please make a tax-deductible gift.

Supporters like you make our work possible. Join with us to use your talents, make a contribution to your community and learn something new everyday.

In gratitude and hope,
